How to Reset Your Automotive Service Message?

Dashboard warning is a helpful tool, marking the distance between services and probably forgetting it and exceeding service intervals is no longer required. While this light serves as a helpful reminder, it can be frustrating when you've already completed the task,  you still see a "Maintenance due" or "Oil change needed" message every time you start the engine! Resetting the maintenance indicator light is necessary.

How to reset the maintenance reminder light?

There are 3 ways to reset the maintenance indicator light.

1. The Dashboard Button Method.
This is the most common and involves a sequence of button presses on the dashboard or steering wheel.

Look for a button labeled "TRIP," "0.0/SET," or a similar symbol.
Key Sequence: You often have to turn the ignition to the "ON" or "Accessory" position.
Press and Hold: Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds. The service message might flash or beep.
Confirm: Continue holding until the display shows "RESET," "0 miles," or the light goes out completely. You may need to press the button again to confirm the reset.

2. The Infotainment Screen Menu.
Newer, higher-end vehicles often integrate the service reset function into the digital display or infotainment system.

Navigate to the Settings: Turn on the ignition and access the main menu on your central screen.
Find the Vehicle or Maintenance Menu: Look for sections like "Vehicle Settings," "Maintenance," or "Service."
Select "Oil Life Reset" or "Service Interval": Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the service is completed and reset the counter.

3. The Diagnostic Tool (OBD-II Scanner).
For some complex or luxury vehicles, the only way to reset certain service reminders is by plugging in an OBD-II diagnostic tool.

Plug In: Connect the XTOOL D6S OBD2 scanner to the OBD-II port (usually under the steering column).
Access the Service Function: Navigate through the scanner's menu to find the "Service" or "Maintenance" functions.
Execute Reset: Select the appropriate reset and confirm the action.

Since there are thousands of different car models, there is no single procedure that works for all. Read Your Owner's Manual, the official reset procedure is always detailed in the maintenance section of your vehicle's owner's manual.

Modern cars use an electronic system to monitor mileage and time since the last service. Once the pre-set interval is reached, the computer automatically triggers the reminder. Performing the service physically doesn't automatically clear the digital counter, you have to tell the computer that the service has been completed. However, remember to perform the reset procedure only when the engine is off and the parking brake is engaged.
